This magnificent church is one of the oldest in Rome and it is one of the first places where the Christians could freely celebrate their religious services.
Built in 221 by Pope Calixtus it was completely restored and finally embellished in the Baroque Time. Nowadays it is one of the most beautiful churches of Rome.
The Church is the showpiece in a lively piazza adorned by a wonderful octagonal fountain . The façade is decorated with a splendid medieval mosaic but its interior is breathtaking and considered one of the finest in Rome.
Ancient columns, a rare cosmatesque mosaic floor, a gilded ceiling decorated by Domenichino, mosaics and frescoes between the apse and the windows are a masterpiece by Cavallini. The true treasure of the church are the mosaics decorating the apse which date back to the 12th century showing the Glory of the Virgin.
A real masterpiece!!
