Civil Requirements for French Citizens

PAPERWORK FOR FRENCH CITIZENS

Listed below are the paperwork requirements. We always advise you check with the French Consulate in Italy (in Milan – Service de l’etat civil – tel. 0039/02/6559141).

DOCUMENTS NEEDED

1. Birth certificate on plurilingual model issued less than 6 months before the wedding

2. Identity card or passport in course of validity (copy)

3. If this is the case: permission of temporary residence in Italy in course of Validity

4. Certificate of residence in France

BIRTH CERTIFICATE

It is important that the birth certificate shows the name of your parents.

In case you are divorced the birth certificate has to mention the wedding and the divorce.

If you are widow, a death certificate is also required

When you have all the documents ready you need to fax us copies of everything. We will check them with the French consulate in Italy. We will check with them if they require the originals to issue the Nulla Osta.

NULLA OSTA

A NULLA OSTA is required for getting married in Italy. If you are divorced this certificate reports also the date of divorce. Please, note that the minimum time for obtaining the Nulla Osta is at least 50 days. This document is done at the Consulat General de France in Italy.

ONCE IN ITALY

Once in Italy you will have to do the declaration at the town hall, in which you state that you are free and want to marry (it is necessary that a translator is present at the declaration). This is usually required at least a couple of days before the Wedding. In some locations 3 or 4 days before.

If you have been divorced less than 300 days from the proposed wedding date, there are further requirements to obtain permission to marry in Italy.

Please note that it is extremely important that your full name is written in the same way in all the documents, otherwise the wedding office will not accept the paperwork
