The castle is located on a gentle hilltop that dominates the vineyards. Around the castle a little hamlet, that consists of the ancient farmhouses restored into holiday apartments.

There are 21 apartments located in the 5 farmhouses nearby the castle; and a few others in the restored stone farmhouses around the estate grounds (all within less than one mile from the castle). A bit further, still in the estate, a secluded villa, which accommodates 16 people with its own private gardens and a large private pool.

All apartments have been restored with attention to traditional materials including chestnut beams and terracotta floors; all apartments have the use of a pool and a garden outside.

This castle was built in the XII century as a defensive fortress to protect Siena from the East. In mid-1400 the castle was donated with its thousand hectares of land by Siena republic to a noble family that held the property until 1900. At that time Modanella was a self-sufficient community with its own school, the church, farmhouses, and the wine and olive cultivation.

Despite the many changes that have modified the hamlet over the centuries the castle has retained his appearance of strength; and when you enter the elegant court and admires the porch and the clock tower a feeling of warm welcome will pervade you.

In the hamlet, near the castle is located a lovely XVII century church. The church can accommodate 80 people seated and about 20 standing for your romantic Siena wedding.
